Garden Coaching

Exquisite Gardens. Timeless Elegance. Your Sanctuary Shaped by Nature.

Garden Coaching is for clients who want to be hands-on in their own landscape, with expert guidance that keeps the garden moving in the right direction. It is a refined, “done-with-you” service: you remain the steward of your garden, and I provide the trained eye, seasonal strategy, and horticultural precision that protect your time, your investment, and the long-term beauty of the landscape, including how planting and quietly integrated hardscaping work together.

Begin with a brief phone conversation. On-site consultations are scheduled when we’re aligned.

What Garden Coaching Is

Garden Coaching is ongoing, personalized guidance designed to help you understand what your garden is doing, what to encourage, what to refine, and what to avoid. It brings clarity to decisions that are easy to get wrong, pruning timing, plant edits, spacing, seasonal cutbacks, soil health, and the small structural adjustments that keep a garden reading clean and intentional.

Coaching can be a stand-alone engagement, or it can follow a new installation to support establishment and refinement through the first seasons.

Who Garden Coaching Is For

Garden Coaching is ideal when you:

  • Love being involved in your garden, but want expert direction and an experienced eye

  • Want your landscape to feel more intentional, coherent, and easier to maintain

  • Have an existing garden that needs editing, simplification, or stronger structure

  • Want guidance on pruning, timing, and plant performance across seasons

  • Are reducing lawn and building layered beds over time

  • Want ecological function, pollinators, birds, and habitat value, without losing refinement

  • Have hardscape already in place and want planting and quietly integrated hardscaping to feel unified

  • Prefer phased progress rather than a full transformation all at once

How Coaching Works

Begin with a Garden Walk

After your initial phone conversation, we schedule an on-site visit to walk the garden, read conditions, and clarify priorities. I’ll help you see what’s working, what wants to change, and what to do first, so your effort goes into the moves that matter most.

A Clear Plan You Can Execute

Each coaching visit is practical and specific. You’ll leave with clear next steps, seasonal priorities, and guidance you can apply between sessions, whether you’re editing beds, refining structure, improving plant performance, or aligning planting with quietly integrated hardscaping.

Notes and Recording

To keep sessions focused and efficient, clients take their own notes during coaching visits. Recording (audio or video) is not permitted.

Coaching can be scheduled as seasonal sessions (spring, summer, autumn, and winter structure) or as focused visits around key moments in your garden’s evolution.

Optional Additional Support

If you’d like more help beyond coaching sessions, you may retain me for additional consulting at my standard hourly rate under a simple consulting agreement.

What We Focus On

Depending on your goals and the state of the garden, coaching may include:

  • Plant identification and performance assessment

  • Editing for clarity: what to keep, move, reduce, or remove

  • Pruning guidance and timing, including what to leave for winter structure and habitat

  • Bloom succession and seasonal rhythm

  • Soil-building strategy and long-term plant health

  • Troubleshooting: deer pressure, invasives, moisture extremes, decline, pests

  • Bed shaping, edges, and transitions that make the garden read cleanly

  • Guidance on subtle structure and quietly integrated hardscaping that supports the planting

  • Maintenance rhythm tailored to your time, energy, and desired level of care

What You Gain

Garden Coaching gives you:

  • Confidence in decisions that affect long-term beauty and performance

  • A garden that reads more intentional and refined each season

  • Clear priorities and next steps, instead of scattered effort

  • A healthier, more resilient landscape built on sound horticulture

  • A stronger connection to your garden and how it evolves over time

Where This Fits in The Coan Method™

Garden Coaching is guided by The Coan Method™, the same plant-forward philosophy that informs full landscape transformations. Coaching can serve as an entry point for clients who want expert direction without full implementation, and it can also support the garden after installation as it establishes and matures.

This service most often supports:

  • Step 7: Garden Evolution Management (done-with-you coaching format)

  • And may inform Step 1: Consulting and Step 4: Planting Design when a larger plan is desired

Investment Guidance

Planning ranges vary by scope, site conditions, and materials.

  • Garden-only projects typically begin around $15,000 to $20,000

  • Gardens incorporating light hardscape often begin near $35,000

  • Many residential clients invest $30,000 to $80,000

  • Larger estate properties are often developed in thoughtful phases beginning at $150,000 and beyond

Scope, sequencing, and overall investment are refined through a paid consultation and master plan prior to construction.
