Residential Rain Garden with Stone Channel
Role
Lead Designer, Consultant, Project Manager, Contractor Coordination, On-Site Planting Designer, and Planting Installation Artist
Project type
Residential Rain Garden with Stone Water Channel, Walkway, and Habitat Planting
This residential habitat rain garden was designed to manage stormwater while creating a beautiful, restful, and ecological front landscape. The project began with a ground-painted layout showing the rain garden depression, walkway, and stone entrance channel, followed by excavation, leaf compost, stonework, and a custom channel that guides water into the garden.
The finished garden includes a stone entrance channel, overflow exit channel, stepping-stone walkway, small stone retaining wall, boulders, sedges, shrubs, perennials, and layered habitat planting. Phase one established the main structure, while the second phase filled in the planting with plugs for a fuller, more naturalistic garden experience.
Client Reflection
“A rain garden beyond anything we imagined.”
Kathleen A. described the finished garden as beautiful in every season, restful, ecological, low-maintenance, and even lovelier than they had imagined.
