This public habitat rain garden at Perkins Center for the Arts was restored after the original planting failed from compacted rock beneath the soil. The restoration included removing invasive yellow shrubs, excavating the compacted rock layer, replacing it with topsoil, and rebuilding the planting as a layered, pollinator-supporting rain garden for stormwater function, habitat value, and public beauty.
Installed before Covid, the garden came into full bloom during a time when the community deeply needed outdoor refuge. During the isolation of the pandemic, it became a small sanctuary for townspeople, a place to sit, breathe, and experience color, movement, pollinators, and seasonal life in the middle of town.
