Naturalistic Backyard Garden with Stone Patio
Location
Cherry Hill, NJ
Role
Lead Designer, Consultant, Project Manager, Contractor Coordination, On-Site Planting Designer, and Planting Installation Artist
Project type
Naturalistic Backyard Habitat Garden with Stone Patio, Gravel Walkway, and Pollinator Planting
This backyard habitat garden transformed an open lawn into an immersive, naturalistic garden built around a stone patio, curving gravel walkway, and layered planting. The hardscape gives the space quiet structure, while grasses, shrubs, trees, perennials, bulbs, and pollinator-friendly planting create movement, softness, seasonal change, and a sense of enclosure.
The garden was designed to feel more like a living woodland edge than a conventional backyard. Planting layers respond to light, shade, airflow, and seasonality, creating a space that supports butterflies, bees, birds, and everyday outdoor living while feeling relaxed, alive, and deeply settled into the site.
Client Reflection
“It doesn’t just look like a forest, it feels like one.”
Jim K. described the finished garden as a slate-patio oasis framed by native grasses, shrubs, and trees, filled with butterflies, bees, and birds, and shaped through a thoughtful process that understood exactly what they wanted.
