Bespoke Garden & Landscape Design Specialist

Creator of The Coan Method™ Award-Winning Garden & Landscape Designer Serving New Jersey, Pennsylvania & the Philadelphia Region

Stephen Coan is an award-winning independent garden and landscape designer, horticulturist, plantsman, artist, and naturalist whose work lives at the intersection of ecology, artistry, and time. Through The Coan Method™, he creates bespoke, nature-inspired landscapes that feel less constructed than discovered, gardens that mature beautifully, support life, and grow more meaningful with each passing season. His work blends refined planting design with subtle architectural elements to create landscapes that feel elegant, immersive, and naturally effortless.

At the core of every project is The Coan Method™ - a proprietary design and installation approach refined through decades of ecological study, fieldwork, and hands-on craftsmanship.

The Coan Method

Crafted Outdoor Architecture & Nature™

The Coan Method™ provides clarity, continuity, and artistry from first conversation through long-term stewardship. Each garden and landscape is shaped through an integrated process that includes:

• A holistic evaluation of land, microclimates, and ecological potential
• Thoughtful design tailored to the site's natural strengths
• Selection and composition of resilient, layered plant communities
• Subtle integration of architectural, sculptural, and hardscape elements
• Stormwater problem-solving and rain garden intigration
• On-site artistic plant layout to ensure natural rhythm and flow
• Long-term guidance for the garden's evolution and stewardship

This approach results in custom landscape designs that are visually refined, ecologically intelligent, and enduring.

Design Philosophy & Approach

Stephen works with clients who desire more than conventional landscaping - those seeking nature-inspired, plant-forward landscapes with meaning, depth, and long-term ecological value.

Traditional lawn-dominated properties are transformed into richly layered plant communities that evolve gracefully across the seasons.

Spring and summer bring waves of bloom, movement, and texture. Autumn deepens the palette with warm tones and seed-rich habitat. Winter reveals sculptural silhouettes, grasses, and seedheads that shimmer with frost while supporting overwintering wildlife.

Hardscaping, when present, is quiet, understated, and purposeful: pathways that guide exploration, stone elements that anchor planting layers, and subtle architectural details that enhance without competing.

Stephen's landscapes are designed to draw butterflies, birds, and pollinators almost immediately after installation. In select projects, plant communities may be curated to support specific butterfly species, creating deeply personal ecological experiences.

An awareness of time, seasonal rhythms, light, and subtle celestial cues - adds depth and emotional resonance to each landscape.

Water is treated as a design element and ecological force, managed thoughtfully through landform, planting, and rain gardens rather than hidden or rushed away.

THE COAN METHOD

The Coan Method

Where an ecological, artistic, and time-driven approach to garden & Landscape design

Luxury ecological gardens and landscapes are not simply installed -they are composed, shaped, and evolved through a deep understanding of land, light, plants, and time. The Coan Method™ is my signature approach to creating gardens and landscapes that are immersive, resilient, and profoundly alive. Every garden and landscape is bespoke, grounded in horticultural expertise, ecological intelligence, and an artist’s eye for form, structure, and atmosphere.

1. Observe the Land

Every project begins with an intimate study of the site. Before I draw, design, or imagine, I listen to what the land is already saying.

I observe:

  • sun and shadow movement
  • stormwater flow and soil structure
  • existing vegetation and microclimates
  • wildlife presence and ecological patterns
  • the rhythms of wind, moisture, and seasonal change

These observations become the invisible architecture beneath every design decision. Where others see limitations, I see opportunities for beauty and function.

2. Sculpt the Land: Hardscaping & Built Features

Form, function, and atmosphere - grounded in ecological sensitivity.

Hardscapes in a Coan garden are never ornamental add-ons. They are sculptural elements that choreograph movement, create structure, and deepen the emotional experience of the space.

I design, curate, and direct the creation of:

  • natural stone pathways that flow organically through plantings
  • patios, terraces, and seating areas that feel integrated with the land
  • retaining walls and grade solutions inspired by geology and natural form
  • water-management features, including rain gardens and permeable surfaces
  • custom-built structures such as arbors, pergolas, or garden shelters
  • sculptural moments in wood, metal, or stone
  • framed views, thresholds, and transitions that guide the eye and the body
  • earthworks and subtle landforms that elevate mood, atmosphere, and ecological function

Every physical element is chosen for durability, environmental compatibility, and aesthetic resonance with the surrounding plant communities.

Hardscape anchors the garden’s architecture; planting brings it alive.
__________

Time as a Design Material

Gardens are not installed; they are composed over time. Each phase is guided by seasonality, plant establishment, and long-term intent, allowing landscapes to mature with grace rather than force.

__________

Investment Is Defined Through Process

Every Coan garden is shaped through deliberate observation, design, and planning. Project scope, sequencing, and overall investment are not predetermined or estimated in isolation - they are discovered through a paid consultation and refined within a comprehensive master plan.

Because each landscape responds uniquely to land, light, materials, and long-term vision, investment naturally varies based on scale, complexity, and level of architectural integration. This process-first approach ensures that resources are aligned with intention, longevity, and beauty - never guesswork.
__________

3. Design With TIme as a Fourth Dimension

Gardens are living compositions that reveal themselves through the seasons and over the years.

The Coan Method™ embraces:

  • succession and long-term plant community dynamics
  • seasonal expressions of color, bloom, and texture
  • winter structure vs. summer lushness
  • light patterns shaped by solar and celestial movement
  • the quiet drama of weather, temperature, and time

Your garden should feel different at dawn than dusk, and different in January than June. Time becomes an essential design material.

4. Compose Ecological Plant Communities

Rather than decorative landscaping, I design living, layered plant communities-biodiverse systems that support pollinators, birds, soil life, and ecological resilience.

Each garden is built from:

  • native and climate-adapted ornamentals
  • balanced strata (groundcovers → perennials → shrubs → canopy)
  • dynamic seasonal sequences
  • cooperative competition to reduce maintenance
  • ecological logic that mirrors natural systems

These gardens are lush, habitat-rich, and become more self-sustaining as they mature.

5. Curate the Human Experience

Beautiful gardens are not meant for observation -they are meant for immersion.

The Coan Method™ intentionally shapes:

  • how you enter and how you move
  • where your body naturally wants to pause
  • sightlines from inside the home
  • how texture, scent, and sound shift throughout the day
  • how the garden feels in low light, evening shade, or moonlight
  • intimate moments vs. open vistas

The result is a place that feels restorative, atmospheric, and deeply personal.

6. Build With Precision, Steward With Care

Once the design is approved, I personally guide the layout, plant placement, and installation so that every detail aligns with the original artistic and ecological vision.

I ensure that:

  • plant placement is done compositionally, not mechanically
  • hardscape forms echo the geometry and flow of the land
  • drainage and grade solutions are both functional and beautiful
  • long-term plant health is protected from day one
  • the garden’s ecological logic remains intact during installation

After installation, I offer guidance on stewardship, ensuring the garden matures into its full expression.

7. A Garden That Evolves With You

A Coan garden is a living, breathing environment that becomes richer every season.

Over time it will:

  • deepen in texture, complexity, and habitat value
  • require less maintenance as layers fill in
  • support more pollinators, birds, and beneficial wildlife
  • adapt naturally to seasonal cycles and climate variations
  • remain artistically cohesive through every stage of growth

This is the luxury of ecological design - beauty that intensifies, rather than fades, with time.

The Result

A bespoke ecological garden that feels inevitable - as if it always belonged to the land.

The Coan Method™ creates spaces that are:

  • sculptural and grounded
  • lush and ecologically alive
  • immersive and atmospheric
  • architecturally strong yet deeply natural
  • designed to grow more beautiful every year

It’s not landscaping. It’s a living experience.

DESIGN PHILOSOPHY

The Coan Method Design Philosophy:

My goal is to create horticulturally rich, ecologically grounded gardens and landscapes that are not only beautiful and lush throughout the year, but also functional, resilient, and deeply supportive of the pollinators, birds, and wildlife that sustain the living fabric of our world. Every design is crafted to solve the real issues present in a landscape - soil, water, light, microclimate, plant sociability - while expressing beauty with purpose and intention.

A meaningful garden must be deeply layered, densely planted, and alive with seasonal interest. It should draw people into the landscape, not sit as a distant picture admired only from behind a window or patio edge. Gardens should evoke wonder, discovery, transformation, and a sense of refuge. They should offer places to wander, linger, sit, and exhale. And, importantly, they should function as thriving habitat - providing nectar, pollen, seeds, shelter, nesting sites, and overwintering structure for birds, butterflies, bees, moths, fireflies, and the many other organisms whose presence brings the garden into full expression.

When we design with native and beneficial plant species—and understand how they grow, spread, and interact - we recreate not an imitation of “nature,” but a new, intentional, ecologically vibrant form of it. A garden done right becomes a living engine: feeding early-emerging pollinators, sustaining migrating birds, supporting larval host cycles, and offering year-round structure and forage. These gardens benefit everyone and everything: people, birds, bees, butterflies, and the wider web of life.

A New Reality: The Garden of Today

There is no returning to some mythical moment of a “pure native landscape.” Native itself is a snapshot in time. What was native 50, 500, or 5,000 years ago isn’t necessarily what thrives today - and won’t necessarily be what thrives 500 years from now. Climate, geology, weather patterns, hydrology, plant migration, human settlement, and global movement have always shaped the plant communities around us.

With human influence, the world has already shifted into a novel ecological era. Seeds move by water, weather, birds, mammals, and people. Landscape changes follow us. A plant treasured in someone’s homeland becomes an “invasive” in another. These shifts are not reversible; the ecological clock does not run backward. We live in a world that has been permanently altered - soil, species, and systems alike.

The goal now is to design gardens that embrace this reality and still deliver ecological benefit - supporting pollinator species under stress, providing forage and cover for declining songbirds, and rebuilding functional micro-habitats where they are most needed: our residential landscapes.

Understanding Sociability, Ecology & the Plant World

Successful gardens require an intimate understanding of how plants grow, interact, and behave. Every species has specific needs - soil texture, nutrient profile, moisture levels, light conditions, root structure, sociability, and reproductive strategy. Some species prefer to stand alone; others thrive in community. Some spread by seed, some by rhizome, some by stolon, layering, or offshoot. Some are assertive, some cooperative, some quietly reserved. Some are keystone pollinator plants; others provide berries, seedheads, nesting fibers, or essential cover for birds through winter.

This knowledge is essential not only for habitat gardens, but for any garden that aims to be lush, resilient, and ecologically functional. Beauty alone is not enough - plants must fit their environment and support the wildlife that depend on them.

Gardens are dynamic, never static. They grow, knit together, shift, fill in hollows, self-sow into opportunity, and reveal their preferences as they mature. Understanding how a plant reproduces lets us harness that behavior - letting annuals reseed naturally, or using rhizomatous species to stitch together open spaces, or curating colonies to avoid over-expansion. The goal is to develop plant communities that fill their space, reduce weed pressure, and ultimately require less intervention over time.

A densely planted, thoughtfully designed garden - within two to three years - typically becomes low-maintenance, needing little supplemental water and minimal ongoing input beyond stewardship. Soil structure, infiltration rates, and physiographic region (Coastal Plain vs. Piedmont, etc.) all play crucial roles in determining exactly how that garden will behave.

When executed well, this approach creates gardens that not only flourish aesthetically, but become vital ecological corridors where birds can feed and shelter - and where pollinators find a continuous succession of nectar, pollen, and host plants from early spring through late fall.

Beginning With a Clean Slate

I strive to begin with as clean a slate as the property allows. This often means removing or editing existing plants, correcting soil issues, managing invasive species, and preparing the site with intention and care. When appropriate, certain existing plants can be integrated, relocated, or rehabilitated - but only if they truly support the long-term vision, ecological function, and wildlife value of the design.

The Coan Method™ combines horticultural science, ecological understanding, and artistic intuition into a unified process. It guides every step - from concept, to plant sociology, to on-site layout, to the final arrangement where I “paint” with living plants to create expressive, resilient garden communities that offer sanctuary for both people and wildlife.

In Essence

My design philosophy is a devotion to beauty, ecology, and the quiet sophistication of a garden shaped by deep horticultural understanding. It honors the evolving nature of our world and celebrates the landscapes we can create today - gardens that nourish pollinators, shelter birds, and support the living systems that surround us. At the same time, these spaces are crafted as intimate human sanctuaries: serene, immersive environments where one can unwind, reflect, and feel restored.

These gardens are designed to soothe. To draw you into their depth. To offer a place where the world slows, the senses awaken, and the landscape becomes an elegant extension of your own wellbeing. They are immersive, resilient, intentionally layered, and timeless - serving both the ecology of the land and the inner life of the people who inhabit it.

We are not returning to the past. We are shaping the next chapter of nature - creating refined havens for wildlife and deeply personal sanctuaries for people - one garden at a time.

PLANTING PHILOSOPHY

The Coan Method Planting Philosophy

Where living ecologies meet refined design, and the landscape becomes something quietly transcendent.

Gardens shaped through the Coan Method™ are not merely planted-they are summoned. They unfold as atmospheric worlds: immersive, sculptural, ecologically resonant, and crafted with the precision of a designer who studies wild systems the way others study architecture.

This page reveals the undercurrents of my planting philosophy-offering insight for discerning homeowners seeking naturalistic garden design, high-end landscape design, and ecologically significant planting frameworks that evolve with time and intention.

I. The Naturalistic Garden - Interpreted Through the Coan Lens

Where wilderness becomes art.

My inspiration lives in places where nature arranges herself without witness: Mist rising off meadow edges. Wind-driven prairies. The hush beneath a woodland canopy. But I do not replicate these environments - I reimagine them.

The Coan Method™ filters the gestures of the wild through a luxury garden design framework that emphasizes atmosphere, ecological intelligence, and a sense of cinematic unfolding. These gardens feel alive, rooted in place, and mysteriously inevitable-as if they have always belonged there.

This naturalistic approach forms the backbone of my bespoke landscape design, habitat gardens, and pollinator-forward installations across the Philadelphia tri-state region.

II. Planting Frameworks Within the Coan Method™

The architectures behind thriving, self-adjusting garden ecologies.

Below are the core frameworks I use to build plant communities that are visually sophisticated, ecologically resilient, and seasonally expressive.

1. The Living Matrix

A quiet engine of resilience.

A continuously interwoven foundation of compatible native and beneficial plants creates the “hum” of the garden. This matrix:

  • suppresses weeds

  • stabilizes soil and moisture

  • supports pollinators and other wildlife

  • reduces long-term maintenance

  • forms the textural field for seasonal performers

It is the ecological heartbeat of a well-designed naturalistic garden.

2. Sculpted Masses & Sweeping Drifts

Where clarity meets drama.

Near architecture or primary sightlines, I design bold, sculptural plant masses that read with strength and confidence. These forms create:

  • rhythm

  • legibility

  • visual intensity

  • strong indoor-outdoor relationships

They are the garden’s architectural notes, composed to be felt as much as seen.

3. Hybrid Ecologies

Precision near the home, mystery in the distance.

Most sites benefit from a blended approach: structured clarity near built environments, dissolving into softer, wilder communities as the garden recedes. Hybrid systems allow:

  • flexible design expression

  • seamless transitions

  • varied ecological functions

  • emotionally resonant garden journeys

This balance - order to freedom - is a hallmark of the Coan Method™.

III. Pattern: The Invisible Geometry Beneath Every Garden

Before plants enter the story, there is pattern - the secret geometry guiding every layer of growth. This pattern gives form to movement, density, shadow, and spatial rhythm. You may not see it, but you will feel it.

Pattern ensures naturalistic plantings remain:

  • clear

  • navigable

  • intentional

  • emotionally legible

Even as they mature into richly layered, evolving ecologies.

IV. Compositional Craft

Where atmosphere is shaped, and the garden becomes a living artwork.

Here, nuance and intuition take over - supported by decades of field study, horticultural knowledge, and on-site design work.

Interwoven Communities

Species are woven together so boundaries soften and the garden becomes a connected whole.

Seasonal Choreography

From spring emergence to winter silhouettes, each moment is scripted for beauty.

Vertical Architecture

Emergent performers, mid-story frames, and ground-level weavers give the garden depth and order.

Color, Tone & Light

Muted elegance or vibrant waves - each palette is tuned like a mood-setting score.

Repetition & Rhythm

Forms echo subtly across the garden, creating unity and calm.

Contrast & Counterpoint

Texture meets structure. Shadow meets light. Drama emerges.

Transitions & Thresholds

Movement becomes immersive, inviting exploration and emotional pause.

Density & Pacing

Compression and release shape the garden’s tempo.

View Framing & Reveals

Moments unfold gradually, heightening anticipation and wonder.

This is where my work shifts from design into garden architecture-a multisensory experience orchestrated for the discerning eye.

V. Care, Evolution & Long-Term Stewardship

A garden that grows wiser with time.

Naturalistic gardens are alive. They shift, recalibrate, and negotiate balance year after year. Through Garden Evolution Management, I:

  • adjust species balance

  • refine densities

  • introduce accents

  • edit overreaches

  • guide ecological succession

This is not maintenance - it is stewardship. A partnership between designer, client, and the living system itself.

The result is a landscape that becomes richer, more meaningful, and more resilient with each passing season.

VI. Why This Matters

Because true luxury is not static-it evolves.

Naturalistic design is the intersection of ecological function and refined artistry. It is neither wild neglect nor rigid formality. It is a living medium that rewards curiosity, nurtures pollinators and birds, and elevates the emotional value of your home.

For high-end clients, this approach offers:

  • long-term stability and resilience

  • reduced maintenance stress

  • immersive seasonal beauty

  • ecological integrity

  • a landscape that matures into its fullest expression

This is the promise of the Coan Method™ - a garden that becomes part of your life’s story.

SMART HOMEOWNERS GUIDE TO LANDSCAPE DESIGN

The Smart Homeowner's guide to Landscape Design

An article by Stephen Coan

Most homeowners know they want to enjoy their property and make it look better. But they’re often fuzzy on who does what, how long it takes, and why design matters so much. This guide clears the fog — so you know exactly what to expect, what you’re paying for, and why hiring a landscape designer is one of the highest-ROI decisions you can make for your home.

1. Landscaper vs Landscape Designer: What’s the Difference? Think of your outdoor space like a house:

  • Alandscaperis the builder - they install, maintain, mow, prune, mulch, dig, and construct.
  • landscape designeris the architect - they create the plan, the vision, the layout, the functional flow, and the aesthetic style.
  • A landscape designer that is also a horticulturist is a Plant specialist.

Landscaper

  • Works hands-on with soil, plants, lawn care, clean-ups, and installations.
  • Focus:execution and maintenance
  • When to hire: When you know exactly what you want done and simply need the labor.

Landscape Designer

  • Creates the big picture plan for your property.
  • Works with shapes, space, sun movement, drainage, circulation, planting palettes, zoning, and visual harmony.
  • Focus:strategy, beauty, lifestyle, functionality
  • When to hire: When you want anything more sophisticated than “fresh mulch and a tidy lawn.”

In one sentence: A landscaper builds the plan. A landscape designer creates the plan.

2. Landscape Architect vs Landscape Designer: What’s the Difference?

People often assume these two roles are interchangeable - but they’re quite different.

Landscape Architect

  • Has a university degree and state license.
  • Specializes in large-scale and technical projects: parks, commercial properties, stormwater systems, public spaces.
  • Required when permitting, engineering, or complex grading is involved.

Landscape Designer

  • Focuses on residential and small-scale projects and commercial, institutional, and public gardens.
  • Blends artistry, horticulture, and functionality.
  • Designs outdoor living spaces, planting schemes, patios, pools, walkways, front entries, courtyards, and backyard retreats.
  • Often more nimble and more affordable for homeowners than architects.

In one sentence: A landscape architect is ideal for complex, engineered sites. A landscape designer is ideal for creating beautiful, livable outdoor spaces at a residential scale and gardens at Residential, Commercial, Institutional, and Public scales.

3. How Long Does a Landscape Design Project Take and Why?

If you think landscape design is just “drawing where the plants go,” prepare to be pleasantly surprised. A proper design process has several layers - each one protects your budget and ensures the finished project looks phenomenal. Typical Timeline: 4–8 Weeks or more for the designs (depending on project size, revisions, scope, and waiting list.)

Step 1: Consultation & Site Walk (1 week)

  • Understand your goals, style, and lifestyle
  • Evaluate site conditions
  • Discuss budget ranges and priorities

Step 2: Site Measurements & Analysis (1-2 weeks)

  • Sun studies
  • Drainage & grading notes
  • Existing plant assessment
  • Access and circulation
  • Photographs and base maps

Step 3: Concept Development (1-2 weeks)

  • Preliminary sketches
  • Mood boards or inspiration images
  • Shape studies and layout options
  • Functional zoning of the property

Step 4: Final Design & Planting Plan (2-3 weeks)

  • Hardscape details
  • Planting palette
  • Spatial layout
  • Materials suggestions
  • Cost-range discussions

Step 5: Build Support / Contractor Coordination (1 or more months depending upon contractor scheduling)

  • Once plans are approved, designers help coordinate with landscapers and builders
  • Ensures the project is installed exactly as designed
  • Prevents costly on-site improvisation mistakes

Why it takes months - not weeks

Because a great design requires:

  • Research
  • Sun & drainage analysis
  • Creative planning
  • Multiple plant options
  • Layered decision-making
  • Hardscape + softscape integration
  • Budget shaping
  • Construction-feasible details
  • Plant selection and coordination
  • Materials selections and ordering
  • Contractor searches and estimates
  • Construction scheduling, Construction, and plantings

The result? A space that works, lasts, and feels amazing - not a random collection of plants fighting for survival.

LANDSCAPE DESIGN ROI

Does Landscape Design Add ROI?

You’ve probably heard homeowners say:  “Landscaping is the best investment you can make.”  They’re not wrong. One builder summarized it perfectly in regards to their return on investment (ROI):

  • 1x return for interior renovations
  • 5x return for outdoor structures
  • 15x return for landscaping

And he’s not guessing - these ratios appear over and over in property valuation reports.

Why does landscaping give such a strong return? Because it improves the three things buyers care about most:

  1. Curb Appeal First impressions directly influence perceived value.
  2. Livability Outdoor living spaces (patios, fire pits, gardens, shade structures) expand your usable square footage at a fraction of the price of building inside.
  3. Emotional Value People buy homes emotionally.

Landscaping is the single most powerful way to create that “I love this place” feeling in seconds.

Plus -plants grow. Meaning your investment appreciates rather than depreciates.

What adds the most value?

  • Front entry redesign
  • Backyard entertainment areas
  • Professional planting design
  • Lighting plans
  • Paths and circulation improvements
  • Drainage fixes (so nothing floods -huge selling point)

In Summary

Hiring a landscape designer isn’t a luxury - it’s a smart, high-ROI way to create a better life at home. A landscaper can build whatever you ask for. A landscape designer tells you what to build-so it looks stunning, functions flawlessly, and increases the value of your property. And when you invest in professional design, you’re not just buying drawings. You’re buying clarity, efficiency, beauty, lifestyle, and long-term property value.

LANDSCAPE DESIGN ROL

Why Landscape Design Has a Massive ROL Impact
(ROL - Return on Life)

1. Daily Beauty & Emotional Well-Being

A well-designed garden changes how you feel every time you step outside (or simply look through the window).

  • Beauty reduces stress

  • Natural patterns calm the nervous system

  • Pollinators and birds increase joy, wonder, and presence

  • Multi-season design keeps the landscape alive year-round

Nature regulates us - and a designed landscape brings that regulation to your home, every day.

2. Outdoor Living That Expands Your Life

Your usable living space isn’t defined by walls.

When gardens, paths, patios, and gathering spaces are designed together with intention:

  • You spend more time outside

  • Your home feels bigger

  • You interact with family/friends more

  • You gain spaces to relax, meditate, entertain, and breathe

A thoughtfully designed landscape isn’t “outside.” It becomes part of your daily life.

3. Human Sanctuary & Refuge

A truly exceptional garden becomes a private retreat - a living sanctuary.

It gives you:

  • A place to unwind

  • A place to think

  • A place to reset

  • A place to reconnect with the natural world

This is not a luxury. It is a form of wellness.

4. Ecological Function That Enriches Your Life

When plants, wildlife, and habitat systems are designed with ecological intelligence, your landscape begins to support life instead of fighting against it.

  • Pollinators arrive

  • Birds nest and feed

  • Seasonal blooms create continuity of color and interest

  • Rainwater is absorbed instead of flooding

  • Maintenance decreases as systems strengthen

This is a garden that gives back - to nature, and to you.

5. Plants Appreciate - Emotionally and Financially

Unlike interior renovations, plants grow, mature, and increase beauty with time.

And with each passing season:

  • Shade deepens

  • Textures develop

  • Structure strengthens

  • Wildlife increases

  • Peace expands

Your ROL grows year after year, with zero depreciation.

What Features Deliver the Highest ROL?

  • Professional ecological planting design

  • Nature-inspired garden rooms you actually use

  • Paths that invite wandering rather than confining movement

  • Lighting that transforms your landscape into a nighttime sanctuary

  • Rain gardens and drainage solutions that eliminate worry

  • Front entry redesigns that shift your mood every time you come home

  • Human-scale places of rest, refuge, and contemplation

These aren’t luxuries. These are quality-of-life systems.

In Summary

Hiring a professional landscape designer isn’t just about boosting property value - it’s a high-impact, life-enhancing decision that improves your daily experience in profound, ongoing ways.

A landscaper builds what you ask for. A landscape designer shows you what is possible.

Through The Coan Method™, every detail - from the structure of the garden rooms to the layers of plants to the flow of people, pollinators, water, and light - works together to create:

  • Beauty

  • Wellness

  • Sanctuary

  • Ecological function

  • Joy

  • A deeper connection to the natural world

That is Return on Life. And it is priceless.

WHERE YOUR LANDSCAPE STORY BEGINS

Where Your Landscape Story Begins

The Flipper. The Investor. The Naturalist. The Luxury Lifestyler. Four journeys. One transformative process.

Every landscape holds a quiet intention, an unspoken pull toward beauty, meaning, and transformation. Some clients arrive seeking swift elevation and the unmistakable impact of renewed curb appeal. Others look toward the distant horizon, investing in gardens that mature with time and deepen the value of the land itself. Some yearn for a simple, soulful connection to nature… while others pursue a fully bespoke outdoor world crafted with artistry, rarity, and quiet luxury.

These four archetypes reveal the distinct ways people invest in their landscapes: The Flipper, The Investor, The Naturalist, and The Luxury Lifestyler. Each moves through the garden differently, one driven by return, another by longevity, another by spirit, and one by the desire to live beautifully and expansively.

Through The Coan Method™, these intentions take form. This structured yet deeply intuitive process blends horticultural precision with ecological artistry, creating gardens that feel discovered rather than constructed - layered, evolving, and alive. Whether the goal is immediate transformation or a generational masterpiece, the Coan Method shapes a landscape that reflects who you are and how you choose to inhabit the world.

Across all four paths, the promise remains the same: a nature-inspired, botanically rich garden that endures, enchants, and becomes a sanctuary of quiet wonder.

The Four Client Journeys

1. The Flipper

High ROI Low Investment Fast Turnaround

Strategic, High-Impact Landscaping for Rapid Property Value Elevation

In a competitive real-estate market, flippers understand that the landscape is the most efficient lever for increasing perceived value. A thoughtfully designed, ecologically intelligent exterior, especially one crafted through The Coan Method™ - instantly elevates curb appeal, accelerates buyer interest, and strengthens the emotional impact of a listing.

For Flippers, the priority is clear: Maximum return, minimal investment, immediate results.

With decades of horticultural expertise, I create refined, site-appropriate designs that establish quickly and photograph beautifully:

  • Front-entry transformations that set a premium tone

  • Plant communities selected for instant lushness and strong market appeal

  • Pathways, lighting accents, and circulation improvements that shape first impressions

  • Low-maintenance solutions that buyers understand and value

These strategic enhancements not only boost resale value-they also signal craftsmanship, care, and distinction. It is one of the most powerful upgrades a flipper can make.

2. The Investor

High ROI High Investment Longer Turnaround

Long-Term Landscape Strategies That Build Asset Value Over Time

Investors view the landscape as a long-term asset - one that matures, appreciates, and enriches the property year after year. For this client, The Coan Method™ provides a master-planned, phased approach that aligns ecological resilience with financial strategy.

These landscapes are designed to endure, evolve, and elevate:

  • Comprehensive master plans that guide multi-year development

  • Structural plantings that appreciate in value and reduce future costs

  • Ecologically rich plant communities with strong resilience

  • Outdoor environments that enhance rental desirability and long-term equity

  • Reduced lawn, reduced water needs, and far lower maintenance burdens

A well-designed landscape increases a property’s appeal, stability, and longevity - yielding measurable ROI while creating meaningful ecological impact.

3. The Naturalist

High Return on Life Low Investment Fast Turnaround

Soulful, Ecological Garden Experiences Rooted in Simplicity and Connection

The Naturalist seeks a garden that feels authentic, alive, and harmonious with the rhythms of nature. Their priority is not financial return, but emotional return-beauty, biodiversity, peace, and daily connection to the land.

Through The Coan Method™, even modest investments can create profound ecological and experiential impact:

  • Native and beneficial plant communities that support pollinators

  • Soft, flowing, nature-inspired compositions

  • Low-maintenance gardens that feel wild yet intentional

  • Reduced lawn and increased habitat

  • Spaces designed for wandering, breathing, and unwinding

The Naturalist values gardens that evoke wonder and belonging, landscapes that remind them of the forests, meadows, and wild places they love. These are gardens that heal, enrich, and quietly transform daily life.

4. The Luxury Lifestyler

High Return on Life High Investment Longer Turnaround

Bespoke, Nature-Inspired Estate Gardens Crafted with Quiet Luxury

This is the client who seeks more than a garden, they seek a living work of art. The Luxury Lifestyler desires bespoke outdoor environments defined by rarity, ecological intelligence, horticultural depth, and a feeling of sanctuary.

Through The Coan Method™, their landscape becomes a curated, immersive experience:

  • Master-planned design refined through collaboration and artistry

  • Exceptional plant selection, including rare or distinctive species

  • Sculptural, multi-layered planting arrangements for year-round beauty

  • Garden architecture that supports the flow, atmosphere, and emotional tone of the space

  • Four-season ecological richness supporting birds, butterflies, and pollinators

  • Personal on-site plant placement for exacting detail and compositional nuance

  • Long-term Evolution Management to guide growth, maturity, and refinement

This is the realm of quiet luxury, gardens that breathe, unfold, and feel inevitable, as though they have always belonged to the land.

Conclusion - The Garden Awaits

No matter which path you walk - swift transformation, long-term investment, soulful simplicity, or bespoke luxury - your landscape becomes more than a project. It becomes a living expression of who you are: your values, your rhythms, your desire for beauty, meaning, and connection to the natural world.

Through The Coan Method™, every garden is shaped with intention, precision, and quiet artistry. Plants are curated like pigments; spaces are carved to hold light, movement, and life; and the land evolves into something richer and more wondrous with each passing season.

Some gardens transform quickly. Others unfold like a story written in time. But each, when crafted with care and ecological intelligence, becomes a sanctuary.

If your landscape is ready to become something extraordinary - a place that endures, inspires, and reveals its beauty in every season - I invite you to begin the journey.

NATURALISTIC VS NATURE INSPIRED GARDENS

Naturalistic vs Nature Inspired Gardens:

The terms naturalistic and nature inspired gardens both describe garden designs that draw from the natural world, but they focus on different aspects of nature and how they are represented in the garden.

1. Naturalistic Gardens:

Naturalistic gardens aim to mimic the beauty, structure, and function of wild or untamed landscapes. The design often focuses on creating a more "wild" or natural aesthetic, with minimal human intervention in terms of shaping or controlling the space. These gardens are often based on ecological principles, seeking to provide habitats for local wildlife and promote biodiversity.

  • Key Features:
    • Wild, untamed appearance: Plants are often allowed to grow freely, with less pruning or shaping. The garden may look like a wild meadow, woodland, or prairie.
    • Use of native plants: Naturalistic gardens usually incorporate native species because they are well-suited to the local environment and provide food and shelter for local wildlife.
    • Ecological principles: There’s an emphasis on creating a balanced ecosystem, with plantings that support pollinators, birds, insects, and other wildlife.
    • Less formal structure: Paths and beds may be less defined, blending into the surrounding landscape.

2. Nature Inspired Gardens:

Nature-inspired gardens, on the other hand, take inspiration from the natural world but may not seek to replicate it exactly. The design is often more artistic or conceptual, drawing from the shapes, colors, textures, or themes found in nature. These gardens may incorporate elements from natural landscapes, but they are typically more curated and stylized than naturalistic gardens.

  • Key Features:
    • Artistic interpretation: The design might incorporate forms, patterns, and materials that evoke nature but are arranged in a more structured or designed way.
    • Imaginative use of natural materials: Stones, wood, water features, and other natural materials might be used, but in a more intentional and decorative manner, often in stylized ways (like a modern zen garden or a Japanese-inspired rock garden).
    • Variety of plantings: While native plants might be included, nature-inspired gardens could feature a broader range of plants from different regions or climates.
    • Human influence: The design of the garden is typically more controlled or symmetrical compared to a naturalistic garden, blending nature with human aesthetics.

In Summary:

  • Naturalistic gardens aim to recreate a wild, natural habitat, often using native plants and minimal intervention.
  • Nature-inspired gardens draw influence from nature, but the design is typically more curated, artistic, and stylized.

Both types of gardens celebrate the beauty of nature but differ in how closely they imitate the wild or natural environment.

Our gardens are a hybrid mix of the naturalistic and nature inspired garden ethos' combined with immersive architectural features.

GARDEN ARCHITECTURE

Garden Architecture & Supporting Landscape Elements:

At Stephen Coan Garden Design, garden architecture forms the quiet, intentional framework that allows a horticulturally significant garden to flourish. These crafted elements never compete with the planting -they elevate it. Every structure, pathway, terrace, step, and circulation feature is designed with subtlety and purpose, always supporting the gardens and guiding people effortlessly through the landscape.

Using The Coan Method™, each architectural element is placed with precision to enhance the immersive, nature-inspired plant communities that define your property. Because these elements create the essential structure of the landscape, they are installed first, establishing the spatial rhythm, flow, and foundational framework that the gardens will grow into. This ensures that the planting layers integrate seamlessly with the built environment, creating a cohesive, enduring composition.

Materials are selected for their authenticity, longevity, and ability to blend seamlessly with the surrounding plant layers. The result is a composition where structure and softness meet -where the garden architecture quietly frames views, creates natural destinations, clarifies movement, and enriches the four-season experience.

These supporting landscape elements provide the elegant, dependable backbone upon which your living landscape grows, evolves, and welcomes you deeper into its spaces.

HABITAT GARDENS

Habitat Gardens: (Shown here is one of our habitat gardens.)
Where Nature and Art Flourish Together.

Immerse yourself in a garden that captivates the senses and nurtures life. From butterfly-attracting plantings to serene water features and contemplative spaces, every landscape is thoughtfully designed to harmonize with nature while reflecting your unique vision. I love creating ecologically and horticulturally significant gardens that are not only lush and beautiful, but they immediately attract and support pollinators and birds throughout the seasons and years.

A habitat garden or pollinator-friendly garden is a created garden environment that serves not only as a beautiful, lush garden but also serves as a sustainable haven for local and migratory wildlife, butterflies, birds, and other pollinators. It provides the essential ingredients for them to thrive: food, water, cover, and places to rear their young. Think butterfly garden. It's a type of garden designed to provide a welcoming environment for local wildlife, such as birds, bees, butterflies, insects, small mammals, and other creatures. The idea is to create a garden that mimics natural habitats, offering food, water, shelter, and places to breed. This kind of garden is not only visually appealing but also contributes to local biodiversity and environmental sustainability.

Key features of a habitat garden include:

  1. Native Plants: These plants are suited to the local climate and soil, and they often provide food and shelter for local wildlife. Native flowers, shrubs, and trees attract pollinators like bees and butterflies, and also provide shelter for birds and insects.
  2. Water Sources: A pond, birdbath, or small water feature helps to attract animals that need a water source. It also supports a range of insects and amphibians, such as frogs and dragonflies.
  3. Shelter and Nesting Areas: Trees, shrubs, and even specially designed features like birdhouses, bat boxes, or insect hotels offer places for animals to nest and take refuge. Leaf piles, logs, and branches also serve as shelters for small creatures.
  4. Diverse Habitats: A habitat garden might feature a mix of sunny and shady spots, areas with different soil types, and a variety of heights (such as tall trees, low-growing plants, and ground covers). This diversity ensures a range of creatures can find the conditions they need.
  5. Minimal Pesticides: Habitat gardens typically focus on organic gardening methods and avoid using chemical pesticides, which can harm wildlife. Instead, gardeners might rely on natural pest control, such as attracting beneficial insects like ladybugs and spiders.
  6. Wildlife-Friendly Features: Adding elements like a compost pile (which provides a habitat for decomposers like worms), wildflower meadows, or areas left a bit "wild" can further encourage animals to thrive.

A habitat garden helps restore natural balance by providing essential resources to support local ecosystems, and it can be a very rewarding way to interact with nature.

THE LIVING FOOD CHAIN GARDEN

The Importance of butterfly & Moth Larvae

The Hidden Foundation of the Food Chain - The Life-Force Behind Every Thriving Garden Ecosystem

Butterflies and moths captivate us with their movement, color, and delicate presence. But their adult beauty is only the visible fraction of their ecological value. Their earlier form -larvae (caterpillars)-is one of the most critical energy sources in nature. Without them, the entire terrestrial food web collapses.

Through The Coan Method™, I design gardens and landscapes that restore this essential ecological function, transforming properties into vibrant, self-sustaining sanctuaries for birds, pollinators, and wildlife. Shown here is a Monarch Butterfly Caterpillar feeding on Butterfly Plant (Asclepias tuberosa).

Why Butterfly & Moth Larvae Are Ecological Powerhouses

1. Caterpillars Are the Primary Food Source for Birds

Despite what most people assume, birds do not feed their young seeds, berries, or suet. Nestlings require soft-bodied, high-protein, easily digestible food - and that means caterpillars.

  • A single brood may require 6,000–9,000 caterpillars

  • Many species cannot reproduce successfully without them

  • No caterpillars no baby birds collapsing wildlife populations

If you want birds in your garden, you must support larvae. It is that simple.

2. Larvae Transfer Energy From Plants Into the Animal World

Plants store energy from the sun. Larvae convert that energy into a protein-rich, mobile form that fuels:

  • Songbirds and fledglings

  • Owls, hawks, and other raptors

  • Bats and nighttime predators

  • Frogs, toads, salamanders

  • Small mammals

  • Beneficial predatory insects

  • Even other pollinator species

They are the nutritional backbone of the food chain.

3. They Support Both Daytime & Nighttime Ecosystems

Butterflies fuel the daylight world. Moths fuel the night.

Their larvae support:

  • Diurnal insect-eating birds

  • Nocturnal birds (owls, nightjars)

  • Bats

  • Nighttime pollinators

  • Predatory insects that naturally balance garden ecosystems

A landscape without larvae is a landscape starved of life.

Host Plants: The Essential Requirement

Butterfly and moth larvae are highly selective. They cannot feed on just any plant - they need specific host species. Many gardens appear full of flowers yet remain ecologically “empty” because they do not include the correct host plants.

Through The Coan Method™, I weave host plants into sophisticated, multi-layered compositions:

  • Native and beneficial non-native species chosen with purpose

  • Structural, perennial, groundcover, and seasonal bulb layers

  • Sequential availability of larval habitat from early spring to late fall

  • Overwintering habitat integrated into the garden’s architecture

  • Natural mulch cycles that protect eggs, pupae, and emerging larvae

This is what distinguishes a true habitat garden from mere decoration.

Why Luxury & Estate Gardens Must Support Larvae

Discerning clients increasingly desire landscapes that are more than ornamental - they want meaningful, ecologically significant environments that elevate the land and enrich their lives.

Supporting larvae means:

  • Dramatically increased bird populations

  • Healthier pollinator communities

  • Reduced pest pressure through natural predators

  • A landscape full of movement, sound, and life

  • A garden that matures into a self-sustaining ecosystem

These are the hallmarks of a fine garden -one that is both beautiful and alive.

The Coan Method™ & Larval Habitat Integration

Every project - residential, estate, institutional, commercial, or public - is designed through a horticulturally rigorous and ecologically intentional approach. Larval support is built into the framework from the very beginning, including:

Ecological Architecture

  • Multi-tiered plant communities

  • Purposeful host plant integration

  • Designed meadow, woodland, understory, and matrix plantings

Habitat Design

  • Safe feeding zones for larvae

  • Nesting and foraging zones for birds

  • Leaf-litter and natural debris cycles

  • Microhabitats that sustain the entire life cycle of pollinators

Seasonal Support

  • Plants that provide larval food from early spring through fall

  • Winter habitat that protects eggs, pupae, and overwintering larvae

  • Spring bulb layers that feed emerging pollinators at the earliest moment of the season

This holistic, multi-layered approach ensures that your garden does more than look beautiful - it functions as a living, evolving ecosystem, year after year.

A Garden Without Caterpillars Is a Garden Without Birds

And a garden without birds is missing its song, balance, and vitality. Your landscape can become a haven for life -supporting butterflies, moths, birds, pollinators, and the entire living food web.

All it takes is thoughtful, expert design.

Restore the Foundation of Life in Your Landscape

A truly significant garden does more than bloom - it feeds birds, supports butterflies and moths, and sustains the entire ecological food web. If you’re ready to create a landscape that is both breathtaking and biologically powerful, the next step begins here.

SPRING BULB LAYER

Spring Bulb Layer:

The Spring Bulb Layer is a carefully curated, multi-species feature that brings your garden to life at the very start of the season. Thoughtfully arranged for overlapping bloom times, these bulbs bridge the quiet of winter with the emergence of late-spring perennials, creating a seamless flow of color, texture, and movement.

Beyond their beauty, spring bulbs support pollinators awakening from winter dormancy, laying the foundation for a season-long progression of blooms that can carry your garden’s vibrancy from early spring through fall. Planted in late fall, this layer is the final touch that ensures your garden awakens in perfect harmony each year.

RAIN GARDENS AND WATER MANAGEMENT

Rain Gardens & Bespoke Water Management - The Coan Method:

Experience the intersection of artistry, ecological stewardship, and precision engineering with a rain garden designed using the Coan Method™. More than just water management, this is a signature landscape feature, thoughtfully crafted to transform stormwater into a living, vibrant part of your garden.

Rainfall from half of the Client’s 1,500 sq. ft. roof is captured by a refined stone entrance channel, shown here, guiding water from the downspouts into a sculpted rain garden depression. Engineered to accommodate a 2" rainfall event, water is absorbed naturally into the soil, nourishing the roots of luxuriant plantings while creating a seamless harmony between function and beauty.

By the following growing season, the garden had matured into a lush, texturally rich oasis. Birds, butterflies, and pollinators are drawn to this living ecosystem, while the rain garden simultaneously resolves a practical challenge: previously, runoff would cascade across the driveway, forming treacherous ice in winter. Today, the water is captured on-site, infiltrates the soil, and replenishes the groundwater table, alleviating reliance on municipal stormwater systems.

The Coan Method™ ensures that every rain garden is custom-tailored to its site. Proper placement, soil percolation testing, and selection of water-tolerant plants guarantee optimal absorption within 12 - 48 hours, even in challenging conditions. Seasonal plantings are chosen not only for their water-handling ability but for their aesthetic richness, creating a garden that evolves gracefully throughout the year.

What is a Rain Garden?

"A rain garden is a thoughtfully designed garden of shrubs, perennials, and flowers planted in a gentle depression, typically situated on a natural slope. It temporarily captures rainwater runoff from roofs, driveways, patios, or lawns, allowing it to naturally infiltrate the ground. Rain gardens can remove up to 90% of nutrients and chemicals and up to 80% of sediments from runoff. Compared to a conventional lawn, they allow approximately 30% more water to replenish the earth."

"Unlike a pond or wetland, a rain garden remains dry most of the time, holding water only during and shortly after rain events. By draining within 12 - 48 hours, it prevents mosquito breeding while providing a living, breathing landscape feature."

LIGHTING

Lighting

Illuminating the Garden: the Coan Method of Landscape Lighting

Lighting is more than a practical necessity, it transforms the garden and landscape into an enchanting nocturnal experience. Through the Coan Method, we approach lighting with subtlety and intention, ensuring every glow serves a purpose: to reveal pathways, highlight natural features, and create a sense of wonder after dark.

We believe that in lighting, less is truly more. Carefully curated illumination adds depth, color, and visual intrigue to your garden, turning otherwise dark spaces into captivating nightscapes. During winter, a light dusting of snow becomes a canvas, reflecting color and casting an ethereal glow that animates the landscape year-round.

Through the Coan Method, each lighting element is thoughtfully positioned to enhance beauty while maintaining safety and navigability, creating a seamless blend of artistry and functionality.

FALL CLEANUP / WINTER PREP

Fall Cleanup / Winter Prep:
Mid to late fall is the moment to gently guide your gardens into their winter rest. This seasonal transition is less about clearing away and more about supporting the life that remains - feeding the soil, providing refuge for wildlife, and setting the stage for a thriving spring.

What to Do in Late Fall

  • leave Plants & Grasses Standing Resist the urge to cut back your garden. Standing perennials and ornamental grasses offer food and essential overwintering habitat for birds, butterflies, and countless beneficial pollinators. They also contribute winter structure and subtle seasonal color.

  • Use Fallen Leaves as Natural Mulch Allow leaves to settle into the garden beds to form a natural mulch layer. As they break down, they enrich the soil and serve as next year’s mulch. Any remaining leaves can be mulched into the lawn with a mower, providing nutrients back into the turf.

  • Let Plant Debris Feed the Soil If stems or plant pieces fall, simply lay them onto the ground. They will decompose naturally, contributing organic matter and fostering healthy soil life.

  • Plant Spring Bulbs Before the Freeze Mid to late fall is the ideal time to tuck in your spring bulbs. Get them planted before the ground freezes so they can establish roots ahead of winter.

  • Complete Any Outstanding Garden Tasks Address any lingering garden chores - small efforts now make for a cleaner, easier spring.

  • Drain and Store Garden Hoses Empty all hoses completely to prevent winter ice damage.

  • Winterize Your Pond & Fish Stop feeding pond fish once the water temperature reaches 55ºF, after you’ve transitioned to a cool-water food. Clean the pond and filters, and add appropriate fall/winter treatments. (For detailed pond care, Carolyn J. Weise’s book ABCs of Ponds, though out of print, remains a valuable resource.)

  • Shut Down & Protect Water Features Turn off fountains; drain, clean, thoroughly dry, and cover them to prevent pump damage from freezing. Note: I personally allow my pond waterfall to run through the winter to provide a fresh water source for local wildlife -primarily birds. As long as the water continues to move, it won’t freeze, though surrounding areas may. Simply monitor it occasionally; I’ve never experienced issues with this approach.

WINTER/SPRING CLEANUP

Winter/Spring Cleanup:

What to Do in Late Winter to Early Spring

The timing of the late winter to spring cut-down is guided entirely by the rhythms of nature. Each year, Mother Nature decides when winter loosens its grip and allows spring to unfold - so the cleanup process adapts to her pace.

If your garden includes early spring bulbs, the cut-down often begins in late winter as their shoots start to push through. Simply cut or gently snap the dried stems, break them into smaller pieces, and lay them directly on the soil surface. This becomes the garden’s natural mulch for the season -returning nutrients back to the earth exactly as nature intended.

If you do not have bulbs, the cut-down can wait a bit longer, but the process remains the same. For hollow-stemmed plants, I intentionally leave 12 - 15 inches standing to support beneficial solitary bees, such as Mason and Leafcutter Bees, who rely on these stems as essential nesting habitat.

This method aligns with how landscapes have regenerated themselves for millions of years. By allowing the former season’s plant material to break down in place, the soil is naturally enriched, the ecosystem is supported, and the need for hardwood mulch - an unnatural material that plants never evolved to thrive in - is eliminated. Once the spring growth fills in, the recycled plant debris disappears into the tapestry of the garden, nourishing everything from the roots up.

ABOUT STEPHEN

About Stephen Coan:

There are designers who work with plants - and then there is Stephen Coan, whose gardens feel less created than conjured. An award-winning independent Landscape & Garden Design Consultant, Horticulturist, Plantsman, Artist, and Endurance Adventurer, Stephen’s work lives at the intersection of ecology, art, and quiet alchemy.

Born in Philadelphia and trained at Longwood Gardens, he holds certifications in Landscape Design and Ornamental Horticulture (Levels 1-3), with additional study in ecological and sustainable landscape practice. His education continued in rare places-guided by many of the world’s most influential designers: Piet Oudolf, Noel Kingsbury, Nigel Dunnett, Cassian Schmidt, Larry Weaner, Claudia West, and others whose insights shape the future of nature-inspired landscapes.

Stephen describes his work simply: “I sculpt living landscapes that breathe, evolve, and attract life. Gardens that begin in silence - then fill with wings.” His creations are lush, layered, and biologically rich, drawing pollinators and birds almost instantly. Many are recognized as Certified Wildlife Habitat Gardens (NWF) and Certified Pollinator Habitat Gardens (Xerces Society), built upon deep horticultural knowledge and an artist’s sensitivity to form, texture, color, and time.

A graduate of the Philadelphia College of Art (BFA), Stephen studied under revered visual thinkers - Ben Lifson, Alida Fish, Peter Rose, Ron Walker, Gene Baguskas, Al Ignari-and apprenticed with Seymour Mednick, a disciple of Alexey Brodovitch of the Bauhaus design lineage. This early immersion in conceptual art profoundly shaped the way he sees landscapes: not as static compositions, but as living works of temporal design.

His path has never been linear. Stephen has carried his still and motion cameras through the mountains of North America, the rainforests of Central America, the Caribbean winds, and the carved stone landscapes of Europe. He is a retired semi-pro downhill mountain bike racer; an accomplished ice climber, rock climber, mountaineer, backpacker, sea kayaker; and a former sailor and crewman aboard historic tall ships. Among his favorite climbs is The Bugaboos in British Columbia - “an impossibly beautiful fortress of stone and light.”

Stephen’s explorations in remote wild backcountry have even led to the discovery of a new hybridized plant species, soon to be formally named and introduced to the market, a quiet testament to his intimate, hands-on relationship with the botanical world.

Today, he trains on a handcrafted Italian Fausto Coppi Columbus Foco road bike - steel, carbon, Campagnolo Record - riding long-distance endurance routes before venturing into alpine conditions for extreme day climbs, winter ascents, and skiboarding sessions that feel more like flight.

He has quietly shaped the Philadelphia cycling and adventure community - co-founding the long-running Belmont Plateau Thursday Night mountain bike Race Series (est. 1989), still held today, and creating the legendary Crazy Cruiser Crawl, a 32-mile rolling city odyssey that has been imitated across the country.

Trained in Wilderness First Aid and CPR, Stephen has assisted strangers on mountainsides and city sidewalks alike, leading him to advocate for Road iD bracelets for adventurers who understand the fine line between risk and revelation.

He has taught at the University of the Arts, lectured nationally, served on the Academic Advisory Board for the Philadelphia Art Institute, and mentored students from around the country. His speaking engagements include: APLD (Association of Professional Landscape Designers), The Native Plant Society of New Jersey, The Tri-County Sustainability Alliance, Audubon Sustainable Green Team, Oaklyn Green Team, Perkins Center for the Arts, The University of the Arts, Moore College of Art, and many others.

As a classically trained and conceptually driven artist, Stephen’s mediums have spanned clay, wood, furniture, jewelry, land art, photography, film, sound, and sculpture. One of his most celebrated landscape works - a conceptual labyrinth and wildlife habitat - was created for the Montessori Academy, aligned with the sunrises and sunsets of equinoxes and solstices.

His art has earned international recognition in Communication Arts, Graphis, and multiple *Philly Gold Awards. As associate producer, he contributed to the award-winning independent feature film “My Best Friend’s Wife,” featuring John Stamos, Meredith Salenger, and Daniel London.

One patron writes: “Stephen Coan’s work carries the quiet force of something ancient-style, substance, and story bound together in a language only he speaks.”

His conceptual project, “QuantuM Chaos,” explores Chaos Theory, M-Theory, and Quantum Mechanics through allegorical imagery - clouds rendered as shifting expressions of thought, existence, and instability. His work has been exhibited in numerous solo and group shows across the United States and Europe, and is held in an array of public and private collections, including the prestigious Kimmel Center in Philadelphia.

Skiboarding:

ski boards are short and wide highly maneuverable skis.  They're like ice hockey skating or rollerblading but going downhill on snow covered mountains with lots of terrain to play on.

Favorite Skiboards:

RVL8 skiboards:

RVL8 - Playmaker Skiboards – 107's Rockered with Zero Camber - stiff - great for all terrain including powder and groomers with Tyrollia Attack release bindings.  These are my favorites.

RVL8 - Sticky Icky Icky Skiboards – 104's with 5mm Camber with Tyrollia Attack release bindings, great for hard pack and/or icy conditions.

Also:

Head - Shape Skiblades with Tyrolia Sympro release bindings - lightweight and short, good to use for attaching to backpack for climbing up a mountain and skiboarding back down.

Skiblades are old school, no longer available, and have evolved into Skiboards.  Two good sites for info and equipment are skiboardsonline.com and skiboards.com The first one carries my favorite Rvl8 boards and the other one carries other brands plus a lot of information in their Learn > Skiboard University section.
